The Department was founded in 2000 and enrolled its first students in September 2000. Nowadays, the Department numbers 369 undergraduate students, 79 MSc students and 16 Ph.D. students, while there are already 156 graduates and 12 PhD have been awarded.

Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology

Welcome

	Aim
	of the Department is to educate and train young scientists at the undergraduate, graduate and doctoral level on issues related to biochemistry and biotechnology. Furthermore, an integral part of its activities is to conduct research in the fields of Biochemistry, Biology and Genetics, develop new expertise in the design and synthesis of new compounds with applications in health, and biotechnology, and to provide service and transfer of expertise in public research and technology centers, academic institutions, industries of the country and abroad.
	Research
	The Department displays a distinguished research activity in the area of biochemistry and biotechnology. The three main directions of Department’ s research activities are: (i) Functional genomics, (ii) Bioactive molecules and (iii) Biodiversity.
	Education
	The Department, responding to the challenge to provide graduates the necessary skills to ensure their proper training for scientific and professional careers apart from Undergraduate Studies offers two Postgraduate Studies and a PhD course in Biochemistry and Biotechnology.
	Career
	Our Department graduates are qualified to work in private and public sectors, for example in diagnostic or research laboratories, in pharmaceutical companies which may either produce or market therapeutic agents, in laboratories conducting qualitative control, in food production and preservation services, in industries or small size enterprises making novel biotechnological products, in agencies conducting biotechnological control of environmental parameters as well as in education.
	Services
	The Department develops novel applications and offers services based on modern diagnostic methodologies of molecular biology, genetics and biotechnology, to developmental organizations, NGOs and private enterprises.
	Comunity Role
	The interaction of the Department with the Society is considered of great importance and it consists of consultancy actions to social organizations and public awareness events such as digest presentations of scientific achievements and mass media interventions concerning bioethical and scientific issues.
