Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology

Unlike other countries, investments in the biotechnology industry are rather meager in Greece, mainly due to the lack of specialized biotechnology scientists. The Department of Biochemistry & Biotechnology aims at training scientists in order to meet this increasing demand in the job market. The Department is committed to offer high quality studies and to create a generation of scientists with a clear understanding of the demands for increasing competitiveness of the Greek Biochemistry-Biotechnology industry, and also the capability of undertaking competitive basic research.

In addition, biochemistry and biotechnology applications give rise to a series of ethical and legal questions, which advanced societies will are called to answer. Our graduates will face such issues that go beyond the limits of their scientific field and diffuse into other fields like economy, ecology, ethics, philosophy, sociology and law. Thus, the Department attempts to help students develop a conscientious attitude toward society and the consequences of these applications.
