CONTENTS - Aim of the course

The study of oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes continues to be a fast-moving area of science. The course provides a conceptual framework which allows students to understand this complex field and reviews the basic molecular principles and the basic principles of cancer medicine, including controls of cell growth and senescence, carcinogenesis, tumorogenesis, and epidemiology. The second part of the course gives some clinical examples to demonstrate the basic science principles, on leukaemia and ovarian cancer.

  • Regulation of the Cell Cycle.
  • Programmed Cell Death and Senescence.
  • Oncogenes: control of cell growth and senescence.
  • Growth Factors and Their Receptors.
  • Oncogenes and Signal Transduction.
  • Viral carcinogenesis.
  • Tumor Suppressor Genes.
  • Squamous cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix.
  • Leukaemia.

Student performance is evaluated from the final written examination and from the successful completion of a personal assignement.
