1. Brief Description:

 

The laboratory of Microbiology - Virology of the Department of Biochemistry & Biotechnology was created in February 2004. The laboratory is implicated in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students and conducting basic and applied research projects in the field of molecular Virology with undergraduate and postgraduate students and Ph.D candidates. Director of the lab is Assistant Professor in Microbial Biotechnology, Mossialos Dimitris.

2. Research Interests:

 

Molecular Μicrobiology & Biotechnology: Enteroviruses, Noroviruses, HPV viruses

 

Viruses use the host-cell systems throughout their life cycle to infect, replicate and re-infect. Consequently, the ‘genomics revolution’ offers high-throughput tools to study the complex virus–host interaction with changing expression levels of many genes and gene pathways as a direct function of viral and host genome properties. Our on-going research projects   focus on enteroviruses, noroviruses and on oncogenic HPV-16 viruses genomics and on functional genomics in host-pathogen interactions, trying to give answers to questions such as: are changes in gene expression during viral challenge a cellular-defence mechanism, a virally induced response necessary for the virus or a functional and probably therapeutically and diagnostically relevant by product of viral infection? These studies aimed to elucidate the processes involved in viral pathogenesis and will ultimately allow the development of new diagnostics and therapeutics improving the management of infectious diseases.

 

Molecular Bacteriology

Molecular microbiology with emphasis on pseudomonad biology (High-affinity iron uptake systems, oxidative stress, cyanogenesis, gene regulation, antibiotic resistance) Biotechnological Application of pseudomonads in Agriculture and Environment. Characterization of microbiota in insects (Cydia pomonella) and aquacultures fishes (DicentrarchuslabraxL.). Antimicrobial activity of beehive products. Microbial diversity in cultural heritage objects and biodeterioration.
