Diploma Project

The Diploma Project is undertaken during the 8th semester. In order to be eligible to apply for a Diploma Project, students should be at the beginning of the 8th semester and have acquired 80% of the total ECTS units of the previous semester courses. Students who have completed the maximum duration of studies must have accumulated 70% of the total ECTS units.

The application form should be submitted typewritten in the Secretariat and approved by the General Assembly of the Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology. The title of the Diploma Project and the three-member Advisory Committee (the supervisor and the two members) should be designated in the application. The supervisor could be an academic staff member or a Researcher from a recognized Research Institute  or a member from the Laboratory Teaching Staff of the Department or a contract teaching staff of the Department. The thesis can be accomplished in the Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology or in public organizations.

The Advisory Committee must evaluate and grade the performance as well as the oral presentation of the Diploma Project. The final degree of the Diploma Project is calculated as follows: 70% supervisor mark, 20% Advisory committee members mark and 10% presentation mark.

If the Diploma Project is not carried out in the Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology, one of the members of the Advisory Committee must be an academic staff member of the Department and must be appointed as a co-supervisor. In this case, the degree of the Diploma Project is calculated as follows: 40% first co-supervisor mark, 40% second co-supervisory mark, 10% advisory committee member mark and 10% presentation mark.

The Diploma Project should be presented at least 3 months after the submission of the application.

During their Diploma Project, the students should work in the research laboratory at least 20 hours per week for a period of 12 weeks (240 hours, February-April).

The Diploma Project report should be about 50 typewritten pages (A4) and should include the following format: introduction (bibliographic review), experimental part (technical analysis), results (which may include tables, diagrams and images), conclusions-discussion (evaluation of the results) and references. In exceptional cases, the above format could be modified in agreement with the supervisor(s).

The Diploma Project report must be submitted to the Advisory Committee at least 10 days before its scheduled oral presentation, for its evaluation and grading. In addition, the first two pages of the Diploma Project report, with the title in Greek and English, signed by the members of the Advisory Committee, should be submitted to the Secretariat of the Department. Before submission of the Diploma Project report, the student, in collaboration with the supervisor, must perform a plagiarism check using an appropriate software and include the software report. The percentage of matching should not exceed 30% in total, excluding the references section.

The oral presentation of the thesis by the student is a prerequisite for the Diploma Project degree submission to the Secretariat of the Department. The oral presentations are organized after each examination period and are open to attendance by tutors, students and the public. The duration of the presentation is 12 minutes followed by questions (for 3 minutes) from the Advisory Committee and other attendants.

The Diploma Project report is submitted to the Library of the University in digital format (CD) and the first two pages printed.
