Content - Aim of the course

Metabolism includes all the biochemical reactions taking place in cells of living organisms. The aim of the course is the understanding of all the biochemical processes involved in the production, storage and release of energy. Specifically, the aim of the course is the introduction to basic concepts of metabolism and to principles in signal transduction, the study and understanding of basic biochemical metabolic processes such as glucose and glycogen metabolism, import of carbohydrates in glycolytic process, the citric acid cycle and oxidative phosphorylation, the fatty acids metabolism, the phosphates pentoses course and the nitrogen metabolism. Particular emphasis is given on hormonal regulation of metabolism and general understanding of the regulatory mechanisms through which biochemical pathways interact dynamically to enable living organisms to grow, to multiply, to maintain their structure and to respond to their environmental stimuli.

The final grade consists of 80% from the final examination at the end of the semester and 20% from the lab practice.
